EFNA4-EFNA3 readthrough is a fusion gene product produced by transcriptional readthrough between the neighboring EFNA4 (ephrin-A4) and EFNA3 (ephrin-A3) genes on human chromosome 1. The resulting protein contains sequences from both parent ephrins, which normally act as cell surface, GPI-anchored ligands for Eph receptor tyrosine kinases. These ephrins play important roles in cell–cell communication, migration, repulsion, and adhesion during development and tissue homeostasis. The broader ephrin family is implicated in neuronal development, vascular patterning, and cancer progression. However, the functional significance and unique biological roles of the EFNA4-EFNA3 fusion product are not well characterized, and there is no evidence it is currently targeted by any therapeutics or used as a biomarker.
