Overview

EI24 autophagy associated transmembrane protein (EI24) is a multi-pass transmembrane protein implicated in the negative regulation of cell growth by inducing apoptosis through the caspase 9 and mitochondrial pathways, and it is involved in the formation of degradative autolysosomes during autophagy. EI24 expression is induced by p53 and has been characterized as a potential tumor suppressor, with the gene located at human chromosome 11q24—a region frequently disrupted in various cancers. Alternative splicing of EI24 generates multiple transcript variants, and the protein is evolutionarily conserved with homologs identified in other species. Functional roles also include contributions to cellular responses to genotoxic stress and autophagy regulation.
