Overview

Eimeria maxima is a unicellular eukaryotic parasite belonging to the phylum Apicomplexa. It is one of several Eimeria species that cause coccidiosis, an enteric disease affecting chickens and other poultry. This organism specifically targets the middle part of the small intestine (jejunum and ileum), often causing lesions limited to this region. Infection leads to dilatation/thickening of intestinal wall, petechial hemorrhage, reddish/orange/pink viscous mucous exudate, and fluid accumulation primarily in jejunum/ileum regions. Clinical signs include reduced growth performance, increased morbidity/mortality due to impaired nutrient absorption and secondary infections such as necrotic enteritis.
