The asexual intracellular stages of Eimeria species, primarily comprising schizogony (merogony), are the developmental phases where the parasite undergoes rapid replication within the host's intestinal epithelial cells (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2023). Following the ingestion of sporulated oocysts, sporozoites invade the gut lining and transform into trophozoites and then schizonts, which release merozoites to continue the infection cycle (Belli et al., 2006). These stages are the primary drivers of the pathology associated with coccidiosis, causing extensive tissue destruction, hemorrhage, and nutrient malabsorption in poultry and livestock (Sharman et al., 2010). Pharmacological control of these stages is achieved through coccidiostats like amprolium, which competitively inhibits thiamine uptake, and ionophores like monensin, which disrupt osmotic balance by transporting cations across parasite membranes (Noack et al., 2019). Because these stages involve complex biological processes rather than a single receptor, they represent a broad therapeutic category rather than a discrete molecular target (Chapman, 2014).
Coccidiostats and coccidiocides targeting these stages act through various mechanisms: amprolium acts as a thiamine antagonist; ionophores (e.g., monensin) disrupt ion transport and osmotic balance; quinolones (e.g., decoquinate) inhibit mitochondrial electron transport; and sulfonamides interfere with dihydropteroate synthase in the folic acid pathway (Noack et al., 2019; Merck Veterinary Manual, 2023).
