Eimeria praecox is a species of apicomplexan protozoan parasite that causes coccidiosis in chickens (Gallus gallus). It primarily colonizes the duodenal epithelium of the small intestine, where it undergoes complex cycles of asexual (schizogony) and sexual (gametogony) reproduction. Although historically regarded as less pathogenic due to the absence of gross intestinal lesions, E. praecox is now recognized as a major cause of subclinical coccidiosis, significantly impacting poultry productivity by reducing weight gain and increasing feed conversion ratios. Control strategies involve the use of synthetic chemicals and ionophore antibiotics, as well as live attenuated vaccines. The parasite's ability to rapidly develop resistance to many anticoccidial agents remains a significant challenge in the poultry industry.
Anticoccidial drugs utilize diverse mechanisms: ionophores disrupt ion gradients across parasite membranes; amprolium competitively inhibits thiamine uptake; quinolones like decoquinate inhibit mitochondrial electron transport; and triazines like toltrazuril interfere with nuclear division and mitochondrial activity.
