Overview

Eimeria is a genus of protozoan parasites belonging to the phylum Apicomplexa. These organisms, commonly referred to as coccidia, cause coccidiosis, an enteric disease affecting a wide range of vertebrate hosts, particularly livestock and poultry. Eimeria species are monoxenous and generally exhibit high host specificity. They infect the intestinal tract, undergoing asexual and sexual reproduction within enterocytes. The life cycle includes merogony, gametogony, oocyst shedding, and infection via ingestion of sporulated oocysts.
