Eimeria tenella is a parasitic protozoan species that causes hemorrhagic cecal coccidiosis in young poultry. It belongs to the phylum Apicomplexa and is one of seven species that cause avian coccidiosis in chickens, with significant economic impact on the poultry industry. The parasite has a monogenetic life cycle, progressing through stages including sporozoites, trophozoites, schizonts, merozoites, gametocytes, and oocysts. It infects the caeca of chickens, causing malabsorption, diarrhea, and hemorrhage. Key proteins involved in the invasion and development processes include Apical Membrane Antigen 1 (EtAMA1), Rhoptry Neck Proteins, and Eimeria-specific protein (EtEsp).
