These antigens, including microneme proteins (e.g., EtMic2), apical membrane antigens (e.g., EtAMA1), and surface antigens (e.g., EtSAGs), play critical roles in the parasite's life cycle, particularly in host cell recognition, attachment, and penetration of the intestinal epithelium (PubMed: 31253156). In the context of veterinary medicine, these antigens are the primary targets for vaccine development, aimed at eliciting a protective immune response to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with coccidiosis (PubMed: 28606140). While traditional vaccines utilize live or attenuated oocysts, modern recombinant vaccines focus on specific purified or expressed antigens to provide targeted immunity without the risk of disease transmission.
