Overview

Elastase is a proteolytic enzyme belonging to the serine protease family. It primarily functions to break down proteins, with a particular ability to degrade elastin, an important component of connective tissue. Elastase is produced in several forms in the body, most notably by the pancreas (pancreatic elastase) and neutrophils (neutrophil elastase). Pancreatic elastase's main physiological role is digestion, while neutrophil elastase plays a role in immune defense. Excessive activity or dysregulation can contribute to tissue damage.
