Elastin (ELN)

Target
ELN
Molecular classification
Extracellular matrix protein
01

Overview

Elastin is a highly elastic, resilient protein that is a major component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in vertebrate tissues. It provides stretchiness and the ability to recoil, making it essential for tissues that undergo repeated deformation such as skin, lungs, blood vessels, and certain ligaments. It consists of cross-linked tropoelastin monomers and is encoded by the ELN gene. Defects or loss of elastin can lead to tissue laxity/sagging skin or serious vascular/lung diseases.
