Overview

ELAV-like neuron-specific RNA binding protein 2 (ELAVL2) is a member of the ELAVL/Hu protein family, which comprises highly conserved RNA-binding proteins characterized by RNA recognition motif (RRM) domains. ELAVL2 is expressed predominantly in neuronal tissues and germ cells, where it binds to AU-rich elements in mRNA 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) and regulates mRNA stability, localization, alternative splicing, polyadenylation, and translation. It is essential for neurodevelopment, affecting neural progenitor cell maturation, cell cycle regulation, and neuronal differentiation. In the germline, it promotes proliferation and survival of spermatogonial stem cells and is required for primordial follicle formation in the ovary. ELAVL2 is not a direct therapeutic target (such as a receptor or enzyme), but alterations in its expression are implicated in developmental defects (e.g., cleft palate, infertility), neurodegeneration, and response to environmental insults such as ethanol or maternal smoking. ELAVL2's regulatory network influences numerous neuronal transcripts and germ cell fate, operating through complex formation with other RNA-binding proteins and post-transcriptional control mechanisms[1][3][2][4][6].
