Electrolyte imbalance refers to an abnormal concentration of electrolytes—such as sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, magnesium and phosphate—in the body. These minerals are essential for maintaining homeostasis and are involved in critical functions including fluid balance regulation, nerve conduction, muscle contraction (including heart rhythm), acid-base balance and cellular transport.
