Overview

Electrolyte imbalance refers to an abnormal concentration of electrolytes—such as sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, magnesium and phosphate—in the body. These minerals are essential for maintaining homeostasis and are involved in critical functions including fluid balance regulation, nerve conduction, muscle contraction (including heart rhythm), acid-base balance and cellular transport. Imbalances may result from excessive loss or intake of water/electrolytes due to conditions like vomiting/diarrhea/dehydration/kidney dysfunction/hormonal disturbances or medication effects. The clinical consequences depend on which electrolyte is affected and the severity of the disturbance. Electrolyte imbalance is not itself a molecular target but rather describes a pathological state that may require medical intervention tailored to the specific underlying cause. "Electrolyte imbalance" is not a molecule/receptor/protein/enzyme/transporter/etc., but rather describes an abnormal physiological condition involving multiple possible molecules.
