Overview

Electrolyte supplementation is a clinical intervention in which essential charged minerals—including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate, and bicarbonate—are administered, orally or intravenously, to restore balance and maintain critical physiological functions. These ions play vital roles in fluid equilibrium, nerve and muscle function, acid–base homeostasis, and cellular signaling. Supplementation is used in a wide range of clinical scenarios, from dehydration and intense exercise to life-threatening imbalances that impact cardiac and neurological function. While generally safe when guided by laboratory monitoring, excessive or inappropriate use can lead to dangerous complications, including cardiac arrhythmia or tissue injury.
