Electron transport chain complex III, also known as the cytochrome bc1 complex or ubiquinol-cytochrome c oxidoreductase, is a central component of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. It is embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane and plays a pivotal role in oxidative phosphorylation by facilitating electron transfer and contributing to ATP synthesis. It transfers electrons from ubiquinol (QH2) to cytochrome c and pumps protons from the mitochondrial matrix into the intermembrane space, contributing to the electrochemical proton gradient essential for ATP production. The process involves a unique mechanism called the Q-cycle.
