Electron transport complex III, also known as cytochrome bc1 complex or coenzyme Q – cytochrome c reductase, is a central component of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. It facilitates the transfer of electrons from ubiquinol (reduced coenzyme Q) to cytochrome c and contributes significantly to the generation of a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane. Dysfunction or inhibition of complex III can disrupt ATP production and increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, contributing to various pathologies including neuromuscular diseases and aging-related disorders.
