ELK1 pseudogene 1 (ELK1P1)

Target
ELK1P1
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Processed pseudogene, Other (not a functional protein-coding gene)

Overview

ELK1 pseudogene 1 (ELK1P1) is a processed pseudogene derived from the ELK1 gene, part of the ETS transcription factor family. Unlike the functional ELK1 gene, which plays a regulatory role in gene expression through binding serum response elements in association with SRF and is involved in cellular processes such as proliferation, apoptosis, and neuronal function, ELK1P1 does not code for a functional protein and is generally regarded as nonfunctional. Pseudogenes like ELK1P1 arise by the duplication or retrotransposition of a functional gene but accumulate mutations or truncations that render them incapable of encoding the corresponding protein. There is no evidence supporting ELK1P1 as a therapeutic target, disease gene, or functional regulatory element.
