Overview

ELOA pseudogene 1 (ELOAP1) is a human pseudogene that is homologous to the elongin A gene (also known as transcription elongation factor B subunit 3, TCEB3), but it does not encode a functional protein[2][5]. Pseudogenes are generally classified as unitary, unprocessed (duplicated), or processed; they often arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and accumulate mutations that render them nonfunctional at the protein level. Some pseudogenes, through their RNA transcripts, may regulate cellular processes by acting as decoys for microRNAs or participating in gene expression regulation, but there is no current evidence that ELOAP1 performs such regulatory functions. Because ELOAP1 does not produce a functional protein, it is not considered a direct molecular target for drugs or therapeutic intervention[2][5]. Key distinction: Do not confuse ELOAP1 with ELOA (elongin A), the functional protein-coding gene that forms part of the transcription elongation factor B complex and has recognized roles in transcription regulation and disease, particularly tumorigenesis[1][3]. ELOAP1 specifically refers to a non-protein-coding, non-functional pseudogene.

Biological functions

None established for ELOAP1 itself (pseudogenes generally do not encode functional proteins). By analogy to functional pseudogenes, possible regulatory roles such as acting as competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) or miRNA sponge, but no direct functions for ELOAP1 have been documented[2][5].
