Elongation Factor G (EF-G)

Target
EF-G
Molecular classification
Guanosine triphosphatase (GTPase), Enzyme, Elongation Factor
01

Overview

Elongation factor G (EF-G) is a prokaryotic elongation factor and a member of the GTPase superfamily. It plays an essential role in protein synthesis by catalyzing the translocation step during mRNA translation on the ribosome. It also plays a key role in ribosome recycling. It is a target for the antibiotic fusidic acid.

Other names
Translocase
02

Mechanism of action

Fusidic acid inhibits EF-G by trapping it on the ribosome after tRNA translocation but before it can dissociate, blocking further rounds of translation or recycling.
