Overview

Elongator acetyltransferase complex subunit 5 (ELP5) is a protein component of the Elongator complex, which is conserved from yeast to humans and is involved in multiple cellular processes including transcription regulation, histone acetylation, tRNA modification, and cell migration. The Elongator complex consists of six core subunits (Elp1–Elp6), where Elp4, Elp5, and Elp6 form a hexameric subcomplex important for tRNA binding and histone acetyltransferase activity. ELP5 itself is not catalytically active but is required for the structural integrity and activity of the Elongator holocomplex, influencing histone and tRNA modification. The gene is widely expressed and associated with neurodevelopmental functions; defects in the complex are implicated in certain neuropathies. ELP5 is not a known direct therapeutic target, and there are no identified interacting drugs or mechanisms of drug action specific to this subunit.
