Elongin C pseudogene 31 (ELOCP31) is a human pseudogene located on Chromosome 12. Pseudogenes such as ELOCP31 are genomic sequences similar to known protein-coding genes—in this case, the elongin C (ELOC) gene—but have accumulated mutations that typically prevent them from producing functional proteins. ELOCP31 is not transcribed or translated into a functional elongin C protein, and there is no evidence linking this pseudogene to therapeutic, biological, or disease-related functions in humans. The true protein-coding version, elongin C (ELOC), functions as a regulatory subunit in the transcription factor B (SIII) complex and has important roles in transcription and ubiquitination complexes, but none of these functions apply to the ELOCP31 pseudogene.
