Elongin C pseudogene 6 (ELOCP6) is a member of the pseudogene family related to the transcription elongation factor B (SIII) subunit 1 (also called elongin C, encoded by the ELOC gene). Pseudogenes such as ELOCP6 typically arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and do not encode functional proteins due to disabling mutations or the lack of regulatory elements required for transcription and translation. There is no evidence that ELOCP6 is transcribed into a functional RNA or protein, and it is not implicated in disease, drug action, or biological pathways. Its classification as a pseudogene distinguishes it from the functional ELOC gene, which plays a critical role in RNA polymerase II transcription regulation and in ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation through interactions with von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor complexes[3]. The functional gene associated with elongin C is ELOC (not ELOCP6), which is a regulatory subunit in the transcription factor B (SIII) complex and has roles in protein ubiquitination, cell cycle regulation, and is implicated in several cancers[1][2][4][5]. However, ELOCP6 itself is strictly a non-coding pseudogene, with no known protein product or activity[3]. There are no known pharmacological agents or disease roles for ELOCP6, and it is not a therapeutic target. "ELOCP6" should not be used as a synonym for the functional elongin C or the ELOC gene product. If structured data mapping for drug targets is required, ELOCP6 should be excluded as a therapeutic target and flagged as a pseudogene of the functional elongin C gene[3].
