Overview

**Embolic debris** refers to a heterogeneous mixture of solid particles—including plaque fragments, thrombus (clot), calcified material, tissue fragments (such as endothelium or myocardial tissue), and occasionally foreign material—that become dislodged from blood vessels, heart valves, or vascular grafts, most frequently during interventional cardiovascular procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) or angioplasty[3][4][6]. These particles enter the bloodstream and may travel (embolize) to more distal sites, where they can block small blood vessels and cause local ischemia or infarction, potentially resulting in stroke or tissue damage[1][2][4][8]. Embolic debris is a clinical phenomenon or complication rather than a discrete molecular entity, gene, protein, enzyme, or receptor target, and is therefore not considered a canonical therapeutic target. For clinical management, devices such as embolic protection filters are used to capture and remove this debris during specific procedures[3][6][8].
