Tooth enamel (hydroxyapatite) (HA)

Target
HA
Molecular classification
Mineral, Structural protein
01

Overview

Tooth enamel is the hard, outer layer of teeth, composed primarily of hydroxyapatite, a crystalline calcium phosphate. It protects the underlying dentin and pulp from damage and decay. While exceptionally hard, enamel is susceptible to demineralization by acids, leading to dental caries. Fluoride can promote remineralization and enhance enamel's resistance to acid attack.
