The endocannabinoid reuptake transporter is a putative biological system responsible for the cellular uptake and intracellular transport of endocannabinoids like anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG). No specific transmembrane protein has been conclusively identified, but the term refers to mechanisms involving multiple carrier proteins like fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs) and heat shock proteins (Hsp70s). By regulating ECS signaling duration and intensity, it plays a role in physiological processes, including pain sensation, appetite, mood, and memory. Inhibition of this process, achieved through eCBRIs/SERIs, increases extracellular levels of AEA/2-AG, resulting in prolonged cannabinoid receptor activation. The exact molecular identity and mechanisms involved are still under investigation.
