Endogenous Cell-Mediated Regeneration

Overview

Endogenous cell-mediated regeneration is a process whereby the body's intrinsic cells—such as stem cells, fibroblasts, macrophages, and endothelial cells—initiate and coordinate tissue repair and replacement following injury. This regenerative process is regulated by local cytokines, growth factors, the extracellular matrix, and immune cell dynamics, all of which work together to close wounds, restore tissue architecture, and renew function. Importantly, the process varies by tissue type (e.g., skin, muscle, cardiac), involves dynamic cell population changes, and can be modulated by therapeutic interventions aiming to enhance repair or to address age- or disease-associated deficiencies in endogenous regenerative capacity.
