Endogenous dendritic cells (DCs) are a type of antigen-presenting cell (APC) that play a central role in both the innate and adaptive immune systems. They act as sentinels, detecting pathogens and environmental signals, processing antigens, and presenting them on their surface to T cells, thereby initiating and shaping immune responses. They comprise several subpopulations with distinct phenotypes and functions, and can be tolerogenic under certain conditions. In pathological settings they can support tumor growth, while in infections they are critical for pathogen recognition and immune priming.
