Endogenous Enkephalins and Endorphins (N/A)

Target
N/A
Molecular classification
Neuropeptides, Opioid Peptides
01

Overview

Endogenous enkephalins and endorphins are opioid peptides naturally produced in the body that function as neuromodulators and hormones. They modulate pain, induce euphoria, regulate stress response, influence reward pathways, and affect gastrointestinal motility. They are derived from precursor proteins like proenkephalin (PENK) and proopiomelanocortin (POMC), and act primarily at μ-, δ-, and κ-opioid receptors. They play critical roles in normal physiology and in pathological states such as addiction, mood disorders, and chronic pain.
