Overview

Endogenous hippocampal neurogenesis refers to the natural generation of new neurons from neural stem cells within the adult mammalian hippocampus, particularly in the dentate gyrus. This ongoing developmental process is regulated by both intrinsic genetic programs and extrinsic environmental factors such as exercise, enriched environments, injury, stress, aging-related changes in chemokines/cytokines (e.g., CCL11, IL‑1β), and synaptic activity associated with learning.
