Overview

Endogenous neurogenesis refers to the process by which new neurons are generated from endogenous neural stem or progenitor cells within the adult brain, primarily in two regions: the subventricular zone (SVZ) and the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the hippocampus[1][2][3][5]. These stem or progenitor cells can proliferate, migrate, and differentiate into neurons and glial cells, contributing to neural plasticity, memory, and brain repair. Modulating endogenous neurogenesis is a major area of research for regenerative medicine in neurodegenerative diseases and brain injury, but it is not a discrete molecular drug target[1][3][5].
