Overview

Endogenous progenitor cells are resident, tissue-specific cells that maintain the capacity for self-renewal and differentiation into specialized cell types within a particular lineage (PMC4331962). Unlike pluripotent stem cells, these cells are multipotent and exist in specialized niches throughout the adult body, such as the subventricular zone of the brain, the intestinal crypts, or the bone marrow (PubMed: 25681534). In modern pharmacology, they are considered a therapeutic target for regenerative medicine strategies that aim to stimulate the body's innate repair mechanisms in situ (PMC3654152). Drugs such as Filgrastim are used to mobilize hematopoietic progenitors, while novel investigational agents like FX-322 seek to activate resident progenitors in the cochlea to restore sensory function. This approach serves as a non-invasive alternative to exogenous cell transplantation by leveraging existing biological infrastructure. However, the designation is considered "incorrect" as a specific molecular target because it refers to a broad cellular population rather than a single protein or receptor; therapeutic success depends on identifying and safely modulating the specific molecular pathways governing these cells' behavior (PubMed: 30127544).
