In humans, functional ERV-Env proteins like Syncytin-1 (ERVW-1 locus) and Syncytin-2 (ERVFRD-1 locus) contribute to cell fusion events critical for placental development, specifically forming the syncytiotrophoblast layer[1]. While some ERV-Env proteins are co-opted for physiological roles, aberrant expression has been implicated in pathological processes, including cancer, reproductive abnormalities, and immune regulation[7]. ERV-Env, as a broad label, is not a standardized therapeutic target, and specific family members such as Syncytins should be referenced for precise biological and clinical context[1][8][7].
