Overview

Endogenous retrovirus group S71 member 1 envelope protein (ERVS71-1, also known as ENVT1) is a human protein encoded by a genetic locus derived from ancient viral integration into the germline. The protein is a member of the family of endogenous retroviral envelope proteins, which in their active viral forms can mediate receptor engagement and membrane fusion during early infection. In the case of ERVS71-1, the envelope protein is considered a "fossil" remnant, having lost its original fusogenic properties and lacking clear evidence of ongoing biological or pathogenic function in humans. While some endogenous retroviral envelopes are co-opted in mammals for specialized roles such as placental development and immune modulation, this particular member has not been characterized as therapeutically relevant, nor is it an established biomarker or a target for any pharmaceutical intervention.
