Overview

The "endogenous retrovirus group V, member pseudogene" is a DNA segment derived from an ancestral retrovirus integration event. While it structurally resembles retroviral genes, it has lost the ability to produce a functional protein due to accumulated mutations and is classified as a pseudogene. Pseudogenes, although historically considered nonfunctional, can in some cases participate in complex regulatory networks via their RNA transcripts, potentially influencing gene expression through RNA interference or acting as decoys for regulatory molecules. However, most remain biologically inert. The ERV group V pseudogene has no established role as a drug target or biomarker and is not currently associated with any direct disease mechanisms[1][2][3].
