Target intelligence / Profile preview
Endogenous stem and progenitor cells refer to populations of undifferentiated or partially differentiated cells residing within tissues throughout the body; these cells have the capacity for self-renewal and can differentiate into one or more specialized cell types needed for tissue growth, maintenance, repair, and regeneration[1][2][4][5][6]. Stem cells are typically less committed than progenitor cells, with broader potential for differentiation and longer replicative capacity, whereas progenitor cells are often restricted to a narrower differentiation pathway and proliferate for a limited number of divisions[1]. These cell populations are critical for organogenesis during development, for maintaining homeostasis in adult tissues, and for regenerative responses to injury or disease. Their function is supported and regulated by specialized microenvironments termed "niches," which integrate biochemical and physical signals. Due to their broad regenerative capability and role in disease, they are a major research focus but are not a single, well-defined molecular target for drug development. This target is therefore not suitable for canonical molecular target classification and lacks a unifying specific druggability or single biomarker profile, rendering it an incorrect entry for most curated molecular target databases[1][2][3][4][5][6].
Enhancement of endogenous repair (via growth factors); Mobilization for tissue regeneration; Modulation of inflammatory microenvironment.
