Endogenous vascular elastase (EVE) is a serine protease enzyme found in the vasculature, particularly within pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells. It plays a significant role in the remodeling of blood vessels by degrading components of the extracellular matrix (ECM), especially elastin. EVE activity has been causally linked to the development and progression of vascular diseases such as pulmonary hypertension, where increased EVE activity leads to pathological changes in vessel structure. Inhibition of EVE can prevent or reverse some pathological changes.
