Target intelligence / Profile preview
**Endoglucanase 5A** is a member of the glycoside hydrolase family 5 (GH5) and functions as an **endo-1,4-β-glucanase**. It catalyzes the random hydrolytic cleavage of internal (1→4)-β-D-glycosidic bonds in cellulose, a major structural carbohydrate in plant cell walls, as well as in other β-D-glucans such as lichenin and cereal β-D-glucans[7][9][4][1][5]. Structurally, this enzyme typically comprises a catalytic GH5 domain which may be associated with additional carbohydrate-binding modules (e.g., CBM1), contributing to substrate recognition and catalytic activity[2][4]. Endoglucanase 5A is produced by various microorganisms (including fungi and bacteria) where it plays a critical role in biomass decomposition and nutrient cycling[4][1][8]. Biotechnologically, Endoglucanase 5A is valued for its use in lignocellulose bioconversion (e.g., production of biofuels), animal feed, and various industrial applications. There is no direct implication of Endoglucanase 5A in human disease or traditional therapeutic targeting, and it is not currently considered a therapeutic drug target.
Catalyzes endohydrolysis of (1→4)-β-D-glucosidic linkages in cellulose, lichenin, and cereal β-D-glucans, breaking down polysaccharides into shorter oligosaccharides and glucose[7][9][4][2][1].
