Target intelligence / Profile preview
The endometrial microbiota refers to the community of microorganisms residing within the uterine cavity, which was historically considered sterile but is now recognized to harbor a low-biomass, distinct microbial population (Moreno et al., 2016). Dominated primarily by Lactobacillus species in healthy states, this microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining a receptive environment for embryo implantation and protecting against pathogenic colonization through the production of lactic acid and antimicrobial peptides (Baker et al., 2018). Dysbiosis, characterized by a shift from Lactobacillus dominance to a high-diversity state containing anaerobic pathogens, is strongly associated with reproductive failures, chronic endometritis, and gynecological cancers (Cicinelli et al., 2018). Therapeutic interventions targeting the endometrial microbiota include the use of targeted antibiotics to clear infections and probiotics to restore a favorable microbial balance, thereby improving clinical outcomes in assisted reproductive technologies (Simon et al., 2019). Furthermore, the composition of the uterine microbiome is being investigated as a potential biomarker for the early detection of endometrial malignancies (Walsh et al., 2019).
