The endosome membrane is the lipid bilayer that surrounds endosomes, which are intracellular organelles found in eukaryotic cells. Endosomes play a central role in the endocytic pathway, acting as sorting stations for internalized molecules and directing them to various cellular destinations such as lysosomes for degradation or back to the plasma membrane for recycling. The primary function of the endosome membrane is to compartmentalize internalized material and facilitate its sorting. It enables fusion events with vesicles from the plasma membrane (endocytosis) or Golgi apparatus, allowing transfer of proteins, lipids, and receptors into or out of the endosomal lumen. Dysfunction or alteration of proteins associated with the endosome membrane can disrupt normal trafficking processes leading to diseases such as neurodegeneration, immune disorders, or cancer due to improper receptor downregulation/degradation.
