Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are a heterogeneous group of cells involved in the regeneration and repair of the endothelial lining of blood vessels. They contribute to vascular repair, neovascularization, and restoration of tissue integrity following injury or ischemia. EPCs can differentiate into mature endothelial cells or act through paracrine mechanisms to stimulate resident endothelial cell proliferation and migration. There are different subtypes with varying roles in angiogenesis and vasculogenesis. EPC-mediated tissue regeneration has been explored for chronic wound healing, ischemic organ repair, and vascularized tissue engineering.
