Endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) function encompasses the regenerative and repair processes of the endothelial lining of blood vessels, primarily through angiogenesis and neovascularization. EPCs, originating mainly from bone marrow, contribute to vascular repair by differentiating into endothelial cells or supporting resident endothelium via paracrine signaling. Their mobilization and function are regulated by cytokines/growth factors like VEGF, FGF, and PlGF. Impaired EPC function is linked to cardiovascular disease, while enhanced function is associated with improved outcomes after ischemic injury. Therapeutic strategies targeting EPC function are being explored for vascular injury recovery, neovascularization in ischemic tissues, and anti-cancer approaches by inhibiting tumor angiogenesis.
