Endothelial recovery

Overview

Endothelial recovery is the physiological process of restoring the integrity and function of the endothelial cell layer following vascular damage or denudation. This process is essential for maintaining vascular homeostasis, as the endothelium regulates blood flow, prevents platelet aggregation, and acts as a barrier to inflammatory cell infiltration. In the context of cardiovascular interventions like stenting or angioplasty, rapid endothelial recovery is a primary therapeutic goal to prevent adverse events such as restenosis and thrombosis. While it is a complex biological endpoint rather than a single molecular target, it is primarily driven by signaling pathways involving vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), nitric oxide, and various chemokines. Therapeutic agents such as statins aim to promote this recovery, whereas some anti-proliferative drugs used in drug-eluting stents can inadvertently delay it, posing significant clinical challenges.
