Overview

Endothelium and lymphocyte associated ASCH domain 1 (EOLA1) is a human protein encoded by the EOLA1 gene on chromosome X. It contains an ASCH domain, shares structural similarity with other RNA-binding proteins, and is primarily localized in the mitochondrion[1][2][7]. EOLA1 is involved in cell protection during inflammatory responses, where it negatively regulates the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 and prevents apoptosis through regulation of MT2A expression, particularly in endothelial cells[1][3][5][7][9]. EOLA1 also modulates vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) expression in response to inflammatory stimuli such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), acting as a suppressor of endothelial activation and inflammation[2][3]. Crystal structure analysis implies a role in RNA binding due to a conserved cavity and positively charged cleft[2]. There are no known drugs or direct small molecule modulators targeting EOLA1, and its use as a clinical biomarker or therapeutic target has not been established.
