Overview

The endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor (EDHF) pathway refers to a group of mechanisms and/or substances produced by the vascular endothelium that cause hyperpolarization and relaxation of underlying vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to vasodilation. It plays a critical role in regulating organ blood flow, peripheral vascular resistance, and blood pressure, especially in smaller vessels and when NO production is compromised. EDHF-mediated responses involve diffusible factors (e.g., potassium ions, epoxyeicosatrienoic acids, hydrogen peroxide) and/or direct electrical coupling via myoendothelial gap junctions. Dysfunction in this pathway is linked to cardiovascular diseases.
