Because this term describes a broad metabolic pathway rather than a single protein or receptor, it is considered a functional category rather than a specific therapeutic target. Monitoring metabolites such as lactate and pyruvate is often used to assess the efficacy or safety of drugs targeting these pathways (StatPearls).
