Overview
Lipid emulsions are sterile, oil-in-water dispersions used primarily in parenteral nutrition (PN) to provide a non-carbohydrate energy source and essential fatty acids to patients who cannot meet their nutritional needs orally or enterally. They supply triglycerides, phospholipids, glycerol, and sometimes Vitamin E. After intravenous administration, lipoprotein lipase hydrolyzes the emulsion’s triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol, which are then oxidized by tissues for ATP production.
