Pseudogenes like ELMO2P1 are DNA sequences similar to known genes but typically lack the ability to encode functional proteins due to mutations or lack of regulatory elements. While some pseudogenes can be transcribed into RNA and exert regulatory functions on their parental protein-coding genes (for example, via RNA interference or acting as microRNA decoys), there is no evidence that ELMO2P1 has such functional roles. It is distinct from its parental gene, ELMO2, which encodes a protein involved in cell motility and apoptotic cell clearance[1][4][6].
