Overview

Enolase is a highly conserved enzyme that plays a central role in cellular metabolism, specifically in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. It catalyzes the reversible dehydration of 2-phospho-D-glycerate (2-PGA) to phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP). Beyond its canonical metabolic function, Enolase acts as a plasminogen receptor on cell surfaces and functions as a stress protein induced by hypoxia. Alpha-enolase has been identified as an autoantigen associated with autoimmune diseases.
