Enoyl-[acyl-carrier-protein] reductase (ENR, also known as FabI; EC 1.3.1.9) is a key enzyme in the type II fatty acid synthesis (FAS-II) pathway, catalyzing the final step of each elongation cycle during fatty acid biosynthesis in bacteria and plants. This reaction involves the NADH- or NADPH-dependent reduction of a carbon-carbon double bond in an enoyl moiety that is covalently linked to an acyl carrier protein (ACP). Its essential role makes it an attractive antibacterial drug target. Triclosan, triclocarban, and isoniazid inhibit bacterial ENRs at low concentrations by binding directly to their active sites.
