Entamoeba histolytica Enzymes (N/A)

Target
N/A
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Cysteine Protease, Pore-forming protein, Lipase, Cyclooxygenase-like enzyme, Metabolic Enzyme
01

Overview

Entamoeba histolytica produces a variety of enzymes crucial for its pathogenesis and survival during amoebiasis. Key targets include cysteine proteases (involved in tissue invasion and cell lysis), amoebapores (pore-forming proteins that disrupt host cell membranes), lipases (implicated in damaging host cells), and a unique cyclooxygenase-like enzyme (which synthesizes prostaglandin E2 for immune modulation). Enzymes involved in L-cysteine synthesis and glycolysis also represent attractive drug targets due to differences from human homologs. Inhibitors targeting these enzymes can potentially block infection with minimal toxicity.
