Overview

Enteric inflammatory cytokine production refers to the process by which cytokines—small immunomodulatory proteins—are synthesized and released by various cell types in the intestinal mucosa, including enterocytes, dendritic cells, lymphocytes, and macrophages. These cytokines can be pro-inflammatory (such as TNF-α, IL-1, IL-6, IL-15, IFN-γ, IL-17, IL-23) or anti-inflammatory (such as IL-10, TGF-β). Their balanced production is essential for gut immune homeostasis and barrier function. Dysregulated, excessive, or chronic cytokine release underlies the pathogenesis and progression of diseases like inflammatory bowel disease, where therapeutic strategies include blockade of specific pro-inflammatory cytokines or supplementation with anti-inflammatory cytokines to mitigate gut inflammation and tissue damage.
